THE EDITING ROOM

EDITING SERVICES

With extensive experience editing across a wide range of productions, I can bring technical expertise and intuitive creative judgement to every project. Whether the brief is commercial work or a complex, story-driven production, I have the professional setup, workflow, and capacity to deliver at a consistently high standard. I work from my edit suite in Eastbourne but also can collaborate seamlessly with clients remotely with high-speed data transfer and real-time online collaboration.

I work closely from scripts, storyboards, director’s notes, and supporting materials to ensure the creative vision is carried through to the final cut. Clear communication, organised project management, and a efficient post-production ensure deadlines are met without compromising quality. I approach every film and video with a very adaptable solutions-focused mindset. I’m great at problem solving and finding work-arounds.

My goal is simple: to elevate your footage into a finished piece that looks premium, feels purposeful and delivers optimal results. Whether it’s a film, social media video or promo, let me take care of your footage.

Background

My first editing experience was with Super-8 film which is of course very limiting, but a wonderful medium. I then moved into tape (Betacam, DVCAM and HDCAM). I’ve had 16mm editing experience (including some training from Julian Doyle, film editor for Monty Python). I then moved onto digital PC based NLEs where I work now. I’ve edited SD, HD, 4K and 6K as and was trained and worked as a TV editor which taught me strict timeslot editing discipline in a fast paced environment.

Editing Reel

Every project requires a different editing style and approach. Film will require longer edits, music videos fast edits (in the main). Both can be highly creative and demanding in different ways. More prosaic types of media, such as business promo videos, can be less stylised but there is still a lot of scope to be highly creative. Every style brings rewards.

Through editing over the years, I’ve learned that having good intuition is vital for the project – knowing instinctively what will work. Knowing precisely when and what to cut. Because I also do camerawork and direct I have a greater understanding than most of the entire video and film making process which helps streamline the whole process.

LATEST PROJECT

Touching Colours

Touching Colours is a 23 minute short film written, produced and directed by Linda M James. It’s not been released yet but has already won three awards at London, New York and Paris film festivals for best drama and best short film. It’s a moving story of an artist whose deeply traumatic descent into blindness over three terrifying days starts her on an incredible journey of struggle and evolvement into an amazing new life.

It was shot over four days on a RED DRAGON on 6k raw and post took several weeks, including some FX shots. The title song was especially written by Damion Lee Taylor and the rest of the music was licensed. More information about the production and behind the scenes stills is here:

SET-UP

The Hardware

An efficient, productive and competent film editing system has to be fast, reliable and powerful. I had built a bespoke top-tier system that handles high definition (such as 6K uncompressed RAW) with ease. As well as having a mighty 24 thread modern processor, the edit suite has a powerful graphic card, blistering fast memory and over 10Tb of disc storage which means projects take less time to edit. I have a four monitor set up to enable multiple applications to be open at once, helping streamline the editing process even further. Editing is a very involved and time consuming process so a strong, fast and reliable system is vital.
